Select JRC 3rd and 4th graders attended the #NewarkReads Literacy Coalition today with Mayor Ras Baraka at the Robert Treat Hotel. We saw a painting of Robert Treat himself before hearing from many different authors, speakers and dignitaries and enjoyed new books! Our school was recognized for our above state average literacy scores as well!

First graders built clever traps to try to catch the leprechaun. That sneaky leprechaun outsmarted us, leaving chaos behind and a special treat!

Our 2nd graders had a fun and festive math lesson using Lucky Charms cereal to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day! Students practiced their graphing skills by sorting the different marshmallow shapes and creating their own bar graphs. We talked about categories, counting, and comparing which items had the most and least. The best part, after all their hard work, they got to enjoy a small treat! 🍀

The leprechaun traps have officially been set around the 2nd grade! The students worked hard designing and building their traps and now we are waiting to see if we can catch Rockie the Leprechaun. Will our traps work or will Rockie sneak away with some mischief?! Stay tuned to find out what happens tomorrow morning! 🍀

Shark Tank: Character Trait Edition 🦈 Ms. Tiana and Ms. Mendez led an exciting project with the 8th grade students of Room 107, giving them the opportunity to pitch to the “Sharks” why their chosen character trait was the most important—just like on Shark Tank. Students selected traits such as kindness, dependability, perseverance, and more, and worked hard to defend why their trait deserved to be “chosen.” Our Sharks for the day were Mr. Trillo, our school’s principal; Mr. Ontel, our Physical Education teacher; and Citi Medina, CEO of Equal Space, alongside Kelly Outing, Chief Community & Programming Officer of Equal Space. Equal Space is a premium shared workspace created with multicultural business owners in mind, offering startup resources, coaching for tech companies, and access to a network of minority business owners. What better group of professionals to help our 8th graders sharpen their communication, confidence, and presentation skills? 👏
