Classroom Policies

Homework Policy

Your child will be receiving homework on a daily basis.

  • Homework can consist of independent reading, workbook pages, or worksheets.
  • Your child will be expected to complete at least three assignments per day: Spelling, Math, and ELA.
  • Your child should spend about 40 minutes carefully completing all assignments.  Additional time may be needed to read, study, or prepare for assessments.
  • Please encourage your child to take their time and be serious about completing homework.  Please also take the time to review the homework with your child at home since it is a crucial practice and extension of the day’s lessons and activities.

Please review your child’s Homework Planner.

  • This is a daily planner that indicates your child’s homework assignments and/or important reminders.
  • Please use this as a checklist when reviewing your child’s assignments.
  • Your child is responsible for copying their homework every morning and gathering the materials they will need that night for homework.
  • Also in the homework planner could be spelling lists and important dates for when assessments will be given.  In addition, please feel free to write notes, questions, or comments in the homework planner as well.

A parent signature is required each day on the Homework Planner in order for us to know that you have reviewed their work.

  • Please do not sign the Homework Planner if you have not checked it.  The signature serves as an indicator that you have checked over their work for completion and accuracy.
  • If your child has difficulty with any assignment, please feel free to write a quick note indicating this so that we can review the skill(s) in class the following day.

You will also review and sign a Homework and Behavior Chart in your child’s Homework and Behavior Folder.

  • Each day, your child’s homework progress will be recorded on a Homework Chart as, “Complete,” “Missing parent signature,” or “Incomplete.”  Parents will also be notified through Class Dojo of this progress.
  • If your child receives an incomplete, he/she will need to complete any missing homework in addition to the assignments for that day.
  • Please remember that missing, not completing, or not submitting homework assignments on time will affect your child’s report card grade.  If after 2 days the assignment has not been completed and submitted, a failing grade will be issued and the assignment will no longer be accepted.

Test Policy

Throughout the year, we will be administering many tests to assess their knowledge of the materials learned in class.

  • When the students are given back the tests, they are required to show them to you.
  • They will be sent home stapled together as a packet
  • It will be indicated in their homework planner that a test packet is being sent home to be signed and returned.
  • Please sign the front page of the packet so we know you are aware of the grades they receive.

The students will be given two days to get the test packets signed by a parent or guardian and return it to school.

  • If the student does not bring the test packet back signed after two days from when it was given, we will confirm that it was brought home and that you saw it.
  • If for any reason the test packet is lost or thrown away, please write a note indicating this.

Behavior Management System

Every day, your child will need to bring their Homework and Behavior Folder back and forth to school.  In addition to the Homework Chart, it will also include a Behavior Chart which requires a parent signature that indicates you are aware of your child’s behavior for that day.  We think that it is important that you understand exactly what goes on in the classroom in regards to your child’s behavior.

The behavior management system in our classroom mainly focuses around a point system established on Class Dojo.

  • At the end of the day, each child will have a number displaying “Positive” points, and a number displaying “Needs Work” points.
  • Students can earn points throughout the day when demonstrating positive behavior such as following directions, listening attentively, being on task, participating, being kind to one another, teamwork, and working hard.
  • They can also lose points when demonstrating negative behaviors such as showing inappropriate actions or using inappropriate words, bullying, showing disrespect, being off task, talking out of turn, and being unprepared.

Your responsibility as a parent is to log onto the website (www.classdojo.com) and view your child’s behavior progress on a daily basis.

  • This report allows you to see how your child behaved during lessons, lunchtime, specials, and aftercare for each day.
  • It is also a great tool to use at home for behavior management purposes.
  • Please review your child’s behavior progress and discuss ways to maintain positive behavior and/or improve negative behavior.
  • Once reviewed, please indicate the number of total positive and needs work points earned for the day and sign the Behavior Chart.  Therefore, take the total positive and then subtract the negative to get the difference.  DO NOT indicate the percentage.

Signing both the Behavior Chart and Homework Chart are also a part of your child’s homework.  If any of the charts are lost or thrown away, please write us a note to inform us and we will replace them immediately.
